It costs the NHS a staggering £130m to cover the costs of avoidable tooth extractions from children, a subject that is becoming a serious public health issue. To reverse this trend and to bring local schools and dentists together the Cornwall-based dental experts Smile Together launched the Brighter Smiles campaign on World Oral Health Day, 20th March.
The programme provides oral health education, tooth brushing demonstrations and healthy diet advice to children and their families in some of the most deprived areas of Cornwall. Furthermore, the Brighter Smiles campaign will demonstrate that for as little as £1500 per school, health outcomes can be greatly improved for young children and significantly reduce pressure on the NHS. We are also very happy to announce that Heidi Wyatt a dental nurse from Truro working for Smile Together is in the running to be named ‘Dental Nurse of the Year’ at the Dental Awards ceremony in Birmingham next month. The committed nurse who cared for an estimated 89,000 patients in Cornwall also fed into the ‘Brighter Smiles’ campaign by supporting over 900 children across the country at tooth brushing clubs last year.
